Reliable flow measurement is a major challenge, especially in hygienically demanding applications. With FLOWave, we have developed a compact solution which, thanks to its innovative SAW technology, does not require sensor elements in the measuring tube which could come into contact with the measuring medium and can measure not only the volume but also, e.g., the temperature and the differentiation factor, regardless of the medium’s conductivity. The new technology has already proven successful in the pharmaceutical environment for CIP and WFI applications.

Contactless flow measurement thanks to SAW technology

Surface acoustic waves (SAW) occur in nature, e.g. as a result of seismic activities. We have harnessed these effects in a patented technology for the inline flow measurement of liquids. The principle dispenses with sensor elements in the measuring tube which could come into contact with the measuring medium.

Interdigital transducers are induced by an electrical signal and create surface acoustic waves. These spread across the surface of the tube and, at a specific angle, convert into an acoustic wave that spreads through the liquid. The waves thus create receive signals when they pass through the liquid once or several times. This occurs both in and against the direction of flow. The time differences are proportional to the flow. The comparison of waves which run through the liquid once or several times results in outstanding measurement performances and additional assessments in terms of the type and properties of the liquids.

Future-proof thanks to standardised digital communication

FLOWave devices use Bürkert’s own electronic platform EDIP. EDIP stands for the “Efficient Device Integration Platform” of the new Bürkert product generation with, e.g., common user interface and digital communication which not only makes using the devices considerably easier to handle for users, but also makes integration into an existing fieldbus system child’s play.
