Data Matrix codes on diaphragm valves: Digital access to certificates and product data
Bürkert Fluid Control Systems is expanding its digital offer: the first types of diaphragm valves are now being fitted with a Data Matrix Code (DMC). This 2D code, compliant with IEC 61406-1, enables the unique, machine-readable identification of every single product. At the same time, it forms the basis for traceability throughout the entire product lifecycle and enables digital information transfer to the customer. Where today it still takes considerable effort to search through documents, contact suppliers or check serial numbers, the code significantly simplifies the handling of product information.

Your benefits: Digital certificates and product data via scan
Due to its compactness, the Data Matrix code is one of the preferred standards for industrial labelling in Industry 4.0. It ensures that relevant information is available exactly where it is needed – directly on the product. A single scan is all it takes to access digital data, without the need for additional research or media discontinuities. The advantage: less time spent searching and simple, efficient documentation.
With the help of the Data Matrix code, you as a customer will in future be able to access important digital product information directly:
- Digital certificates and product-related documentation, e.g. material certificates (3.1 certificates) for regulated applications in the pharmaceutical, food or water industries;
- Structured digital product data based on the Asset Administration Shell (AAS). This consolidates all relevant product information in a single digital package – from the type plate to the specification.
- Spare parts and accessories, with the option to order them directly.
- Further information, such as how-to videos.
- Additional documentation such as the operating instructions and the data sheet.
The introduction of the Data Matrix code and the digital provision of certificates and documents is being rolled out gradually across various product groups.
Traceability in regulated industries
In sectors such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and food production, transparency plays a key role. GxP-compliant processes, FDA requirements and industry-specific regulations demand that every component in contact with the product be uniquely identifiable and its origin traceable.
The Data Matrix code supports precisely these workflows. It digitises and streamlines processes that were previously carried out manually and on paper. This saves time, reduces errors and makes it easier to prepare for exams and audits.
Practice example: Efficient provision of material certificates
A pharmaceutical company is equipping a production plant with Bürkert diaphragm valves. At various stages of the process chain, such as goods receipt or plant qualification, multiple material certificates must be available for each valve. Until now, this has involved a great deal of effort in terms of document management: searching through order documents, contacting suppliers and manually assigning documents. With the new Data Matrix code, all it takes is a quick scan with a smartphone or handheld scanner – the certificate is displayed digitally straight away and can be added directly to the qualification documentation.
Connection to the Asset Administration Shell (AAS)
The Data Matrix code is more than just a means of accessing certificates – it is a key component of Bürkert’s digitalisation strategy. The DMC also gives you access to the Asset Administration Shell (AAS), which Bürkert already provides for over 50,000 products.
The AAS – also known as the administration shell – is a digital representation of a product standardised by the IDTA (Industrial Digital Twin Association). It brings together all the relevant information in a machine-readable format: from digital type plates and technical specifications to documentation. The AAS thus forms the technological foundation for the digital twin in Industry 4.0 – and, looking ahead, also for the Digital Product Passport (DPP), which is becoming increasingly important within the framework of EU regulations. This format will enable the information to be retrieved and recorded by the IT systems in future.
